EGYPTIAN MUSIC ESSENTIALS:
Bint al-Sultan

For those who love Egyptian oriental dance and baladi! Take a deep dive into old-school shaabi with this program, on dancing to the classic hit Bint el Sultan.

Sung by the original king of shaabi, Ahmed Adaweia, this was a hit during its time, and a popular song for dancers. In this program, we explore the cultural and political context as well as the lyrics…and of course how to dance to it, inspired by famous dancers Soheir Zaki, Nagua Fouad, and Fifi Abdou!

The song expresses Egypt's highly class-stratified society, with a great separation between rich and poor. Adaweia came from a poor background, but made it rich through his amazing singing voice and mastery of Arabic maqam. I cover the meaning of the song's lyrics as well as the dance approach, and I think you'll enjoy it!
