Nebtedi (minein el hikaya)

This program for oriental dancers showcases the Mohamed Abdel Wahab composition “Nebtedi (Minein El Hikaya)”, translated as "Where does our story begin?" Nebtedi was originally sung by one of the most famous singers of the Arab world, Abdel Halim Hafez.

We explore the cultural background of the piece, the composer and singer, and how the legendary dancer Soheir Zaki interpreted this piece through her musicality and sophisticated, challenging technique across different performances. I compare other dance interpretations of the piece, so you can get ideas for applying your own creativity and lyricism to the romantic melody and catchy rhythm of this piece.

In this Program:

2½ hours of video discussion & instruction

Video commentary: singer Abdel Halim in concert performance, with Arabic lyrics breakdown

Video commentary and technique analysis: Soheir Zaki in various performances, as well as contrasting contemporary oriental and "Am-Cab" dance interpretations

Technique & Musicality: Soheir Zaki “conducting the melody” + technique practice

LIFETIME access to course videos
